Harare to Hwange National Park: How to Fly, Drive, or Bus

The best route from Harare to Hwange National Park for most travelers is a flight to Victoria Falls followed by a 160 km road transfer. That takes about 5 to 6 hours door to door. Driving yourself covers roughly 740 km and takes 10 to 11 hours. The coach is the cheapest option, but it needs two legs and usually a night in Bulawayo. No scheduled airline lands inside the park.

The trouble is that online numbers disagree. Calculators show distances from 430 km to 600 km and flight times from 1.5 to 3 hours. Many results quietly assume a direct flight that only exists as a private charter. Travelers plan around those figures, then reach the park gate after dark, tired and over budget.

This guide gives you the real picture first, then four steps: flying via Victoria Falls, driving, taking the bus, and booking park entry and a place to stay. Maximum Adventure Trails is based in Victoria Falls and organizes Hwange transfers and safaris, so the notes on the final stretch come from a route we handle ourselves.

Know the real distance, time and cost first

Harare to Hwange is about 740 km by road, 90 minutes by air to Victoria Falls plus a 2-hour road leg, or two coach rides with a stop in Bulawayo. The table below sets the four options side by side so you can choose before you book anything.

Why the distance figures disagree

Straight-line distance from Harare to Hwange is roughly 430 to 560 km, depending on the calculator. That is the flying distance. The road is much longer because it runs southwest to Bulawayo first, then northwest on the Victoria Falls highway. Count about 740 km to Hwange Main Camp: roughly 440 km to Bulawayo, then about 300 km to the park.

Is the effort worth it? Hwange is Zimbabwe’s largest national park and is known for its large elephant herds. Most travelers who make the trip decide it was worth every hour, as long as they plan the arrival for daylight.

Speed, control and budget pull in different directions here. The flight saves the most time. Driving gives you flexibility. The coach costs the least cash but the most hours.

Fly to Victoria Falls if time matters, drive if you want control, and take the coach only when budget matters more than a night in Bulawayo.

Step 1. Fly to Victoria Falls and transfer

Book a scheduled flight from Harare to Victoria Falls, then arrange a road transfer for the last 160 km. This is the fastest way to reach Hwange without paying for a charter.

Why Victoria Falls is the right airport

Scheduled flights from Harare to Victoria Falls take roughly 90 minutes. The park’s own airstrip handles charter flights in light aircraft only, which suits lodge guests on fly-in packages but not a normal budget. Listings that show a Harare to Hwange fare usually bundle a connection or a charter. That is why route planners show such a wide range. Compare Victoria Falls fares across several dates instead.

Organize the last 160 km

From Victoria Falls the park is about 160 km, roughly 2 hours by road. Book the ground leg before you fly:

Three-step process for booking a flight and a road transfer from Victoria Falls to Hwange.

  1. Book your Harare to Victoria Falls flight.
  2. Reserve a transfer or tour for the same day, with your flight number.
  3. Confirm the pickup name, time and drop-off point in writing.

Our Victoria Falls to Hwange Safari Lodge and Hwange Main Camp transfer has a listed rate of USD 75 with a minimum of 4 passengers, and rates and availability are confirmed at booking. Smaller parties should ask for a private quote. If you only have one day, the full-day Hwange trip from Victoria Falls runs 13 hours, with 7 on safari.

Fly into Victoria Falls, not Hwange: the park airstrip is for charters, and the road from town takes about 2 hours.

Step 2. Drive the Harare to Bulawayo to Hwange road

Drive Harare to Bulawayo first, then follow the Victoria Falls highway to the Main Camp turnoff. Leave at dawn, because the trip takes 10 to 11 hours and you want to arrive before dark.

Follow the route

From Harare, take the road through Kadoma, Kwekwe and Gweru to Bulawayo, about 440 km. Refuel in Bulawayo and have lunch there. Then take the Victoria Falls highway northwest for about 300 km. At Cross Mabale, turn left onto the 23 km tar road to the park.

Leave Harare by 5:00 AM and you reach the gate by mid-afternoon, even with fuel stops and police checkpoints. Avoid night driving on this road. Livestock and wildlife cross it without warning.

Budget and prepare

Route planners put fuel and tolls at $100 to $150. Split four ways, that is about $25 to $38 per person, before any car rental. Carry your license, vehicle papers, warning triangles, and small US dollar notes for tolls.

A regular car handles the tar road to Main Camp. Sandy tracks inside the park can need higher clearance, so ask your camp before you plan self-guided drives.

Driving works out to roughly $25 to $38 per person in fuel and tolls with four sharing, but only if you start at dawn and arrive before dark.

Step 3. Take the coach via Bulawayo

Treat the bus as two separate trips: Harare to Bulawayo, then Bulawayo toward Victoria Falls, getting off at the Hwange turnoff. It is the cheapest option and the slowest.

Plan the two legs

The first leg covers about 440 km and takes roughly 7 hours. The second covers about 300 km and takes around 4 hours. With waiting time, the total runs 12 to 14 hours, so sleeping in Bulawayo is the sensible way to split it.

Bus fares are quoted in US dollars, set by each operator, and shift with fuel prices. Ask for the price of each leg at the terminal and buy two tickets. Expect the total to land well below any flight option. Tell the conductor early that you are getting off at the Main Camp turnoff.

Cover the last 23 km

Coaches stop at the highway junction, and Main Camp is 23 km away on the tar road. Do not count on finding a taxi there. Ask your camp or lodge to collect you, and give them your coach company and expected arrival time. Pack soft bags, because luggage space on coaches is tight and you may be carrying it by hand at the junction.

The bus is cheapest on paper, but only if you pre-arrange the last 23 km from the highway junction to camp.

Step 4. Book park entry and your stay

Arrange your stay before you travel, and budget the park entry fee on top. Hwange rewards at least two nights, because the long journey in makes a single night wasteful.

Pay entry fees and pick your timing

Park fees are paid at the gate. On our tours the fee is $24 per adult per day, so $48 for two days. Check the current fee for your date with your lodge. The dry season, roughly May to October, concentrates animals around waterholes and gives the best game viewing. Ask whether the gate accepts cards, and carry US dollars as a backup.

Choose a stay that fits your journey

If you fly into Victoria Falls anyway, these options start from there:

OptionDurationIncludesPrice
Full-day trip13 hoursHotel transfers, two game drives, lunch in the park$270 to $290 per adult, $160 per child. Entry fee extra
2-night safari3 days, 2 nightsGwango Heritage Resort, 4 guided drives in an open 4×4, full boardFrom $800 per person. Entry fee extra
Transfer onlyAbout 2 hours each wayRide to Hwange Safari Lodge or Main CampListed at USD 75, minimum 4 passengers

Dawn and dusk drives are when predators and elephants move, and only an overnight stay puts you there.

Give Hwange at least two nights, because the journey in is long and the best game viewing happens at dawn and dusk.

Pick your route and go

For most travelers, the answer to getting from Harare to Hwange is simple. Fly to Victoria Falls and take a 2-hour transfer if time is short. Drive 740 km via Bulawayo if you want control and have people to share the cost. Take the coach in two legs, with a night in Bulawayo, if budget comes first.

Whichever you choose, arrive in daylight, arrange the last 23 km before you leave, and stay at least two nights. If you want the last stretch handled for you, ask Maximum Adventure Trails to plan your Hwange transfer or safari and we will confirm pickup details before you travel.
