Adventure Tour

The Zambezi River below Victoria Falls cuts through the Batoka Gorge, a dramatic slash of black basalt cliffs and churning rapids that is consistently rated among the top white water rafting destinations on earth. The rapids have names like The Terminator, The Mother, and The Washing Machine. They are Grade 4 and 5, the highest commercially raftable grade in the world. And they are genuinely wild.

This is not theme-park white water. This is the real thing, in a gorge that feels remote and primal even though you're minutes from one of Africa's most visited towns. Most first-time rafters say it's the most physically intense and exhilarating thing they have ever done.

No prior experience is needed. Your guides train you before you enter the water, and they navigate the technical sections. Your job is to paddle hard when told, hold on when needed, and enjoy the ride.

Your Day on the River

7:00–7:30am: Hotel pickup from Victoria Falls. Transfer to the top of the Batoka Gorge.

At the top: Indemnity forms signed (sent via email in advance). Kit distribution, life jacket, helmet, paddle, and rain jacket if needed. Full safety briefing from your head guide covering rafting positions, paddle commands, what to do if you fall in, and how to re-enter the raft.

The descent: A steep but manageable walk down into the gorge to the put-in point. At the bottom, guides assign positions and run a practice session in a calm pool before the adventure begins.

On the water: 19 rapids over 26km (low season). Named rapids include:

  • Rapid 1: The Boiling Pot, the first rush of current below the falls
  • Rapid 5: Stairway to Heaven, a long, technical Grade 5 sequence
  • Rapid 9: Commercial Suicide, name says everything
  • Rapid 11: The Terminator, the most feared; guides often scout this one
  • Rapid 18: The Washing Machine, unpredictable, guaranteed to flip most rafts

Between rapids, the gorge walls rise 200 metres on either side, the water is clear, and the silence between rapids is extraordinary.

End of the run: A steep climb out of the gorge (30–45 minutes, take your time, no rush). Cold beers, braai (barbecue), and vegetables wait at the top. Transfer back to your hotel.

Practical Preparation

What to wear: Light clothing that you don't mind getting completely soaked. Quick-dry shorts and a rash vest or t-shirt. Secure lace-up trainers or water shoes, sandals and flip-flops come off in rapids and are not permitted. Bring a dry change of clothes in a bag left at the top with the driver.

What to leave behind: Your phone, camera, wallet, and all valuables. Leave everything with the driver at the top or in your hotel room. Only waterproof cameras (GoPro etc.) are appropriate in the gorge.

Fitness level required: Moderate. You need enough upper body strength to paddle and enough fitness for the gorge climb-out at the end. You do not need to be an athlete, but people with serious physical limitations should consult their doctor.

Health notes: Not suitable for pregnant visitors or those with serious back, neck, or heart conditions. Minimum age is 15 years (can be flexible for mature, physically capable younger guests, contact us to discuss).

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I fall into the water?
Almost certainly on some rapids, particularly The Terminator and The Washing Machine. This is expected and safe. Guides are trained in swift water rescue, everyone wears life jackets, and the water in most sections flows to calm pools after the rapids. Falling in is part of the experience, don't fight the current, float on your back with feet downstream, and your guide will collect you.

Is this suitable for non-swimmers?
Technically yes, the life jacket keeps you afloat, but we'd encourage at least basic water confidence. Being in Grade 5 rapids is very different to swimming in a pool. If you have significant fear of water, speak to us before booking.

What's the difference between low and high water season?
Low water (August–December) runs the full 26km with all 19 rapids including the most famous Grade 5 sections. This is the best and most recommended season. High water (January–March and June–July) means higher, faster water that bypasses some rapids, the run is still excellent and in many ways more powerful, but some classic rapids are submerged. April–May rafting may be closed entirely depending on water levels.

Departure Point:
