There are only a handful of places on earth where you can see a lunar rainbow, a rainbow formed not by sunlight, but by moonlight, and Victoria Falls is the most spectacular of them all. On full moon nights, when the moon is bright enough and the sky is clear, its light passes through the enormous spray rising from the falls and creates an arc of soft, ethereal colour across the mist. It doesn't look quite real. Most people stand in silence when they first see it.

This is a two-hour guided night tour to the Victoria Falls National Park rainforest, timed specifically to full moon nights when the moonbow is visible. Transfers from your hotel are included. Guides provide torches, safety support, and context, both scientific and historical, throughout the experience.

What Is a Lunar Rainbow (Moonbow)?

A lunar rainbow forms through exactly the same physics as a daytime rainbow, light refracts through water droplets and separates into the colour spectrum, but the light source is the full moon rather than the sun. Because moonlight is around 400,000 times dimmer than sunlight, the colours appear much softer and more muted to the naked eye: often appearing as a white or pale arc. Long-exposure photography reveals the full spectrum of colour that your eyes can't quite detect.

Victoria Falls produces the perfect conditions: the falls generate an immense, permanent cloud of fine spray, "The Smoke That Thunders", that hangs above the gorge on calm nights. When a full moon rises at the right angle, it shines directly through that spray and the moonbow appears.

Only a handful of waterfalls worldwide produce reliable moonbow sightings. Victoria Falls is considered the finest.

When Can You See the Moonbow in 2026?

The lunar rainbow is only visible on three nights per month, the night before, the night of, and the night after the full moon. The Victoria Falls National Park opens specially for these nights.

Best months for the moonbow: April to July, when the Zambezi is running high and the spray volume is at its greatest. The higher the spray, the more dramatic the moonbow.

Photography Tips for Capturing the Moonbow

The moonbow is one of the most challenging and rewarding subjects in nature photography. Your phone camera will struggle, but a DSLR or mirrorless camera on a tripod will produce extraordinary results.

Camera settings to start with:

  • ISO: 800–3200 (experiment, higher ISO in darker conditions)
  • Shutter speed: 15–30 seconds (long exposure lets enough moonlight in)
  • Aperture: f/2.8–f/4 (wide open to gather light)
  • Lens: Wide-angle (capture the arc and the falls together)
  • Essential: A sturdy tripod, any camera movement during a 20-second exposure will ruin the shot

Tip: Shoot in RAW format if your camera supports it, the colour information in the moonbow is subtle and RAW files give you far more to work with in post-processing than JPEGs.

Tip: Bring a dry bag or waterproof case. The spray inside the rainforest at night is heavy, your gear will get wet without protection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the moonbow guaranteed on full moon nights?
No, cloud cover can obscure the moon and prevent the rainbow from forming. We cannot guarantee sightings, but April–July has the most consistent clear nights. If cloud prevents a sighting on your night, your guide will keep you at the falls as long as conditions allow.

Is it safe to walk the falls at night?
Yes, guides carry torches, know the paths well, and walk with you throughout. The paths are the same ones used during the day; the main difference is the darkness and the dramatic atmosphere the falls take on at night.

Do I need special equipment?
Not for the experience itself. For photography, a tripod and a camera with manual settings will make a big difference. Your guide can advise on the best positions.

Can I combine this with a daytime visit to the falls?
Absolutely, and we recommend it. Seeing the falls in daylight and then returning on a full moon night gives you two completely different but equally remarkable experiences.

How do I book for a specific full moon date?
Contact us directly at info@maxadventuretrails.com or WhatsApp +263774183027 with your preferred date from the calendar above. We recommend booking at least two weeks in advance, these tours fill up quickly, especially in the April–July season.
