Fishing on the Zambezi River | Tiger Fish at Victoria Falls

The Zambezi River is one of Africa's great fishing destinations, and the stretch above Victoria Falls is some of the finest river fishing on the continent. The star of the show is the African tiger fish, Hydrocynus vittatus, a freshwater predator with razor teeth, extraordinary speed, and a fight that has earned it the reputation as Africa's most exciting river sport fish.

If you've only ever fished trout or bass, a tiger fish strike will reset your benchmarks. A 5kg specimen can strip 30 metres of line in under 10 seconds. Landing one is a proper achievement.

What You'll Fish For

Tiger Fish
The primary target. Tiger fish are aggressive ambush predators with a distinctive set of interlocking fangs (the "tiger" refers to the teeth, not the stripes). They hunt in the currents and around the islands of the upper Zambezi, taking spinners, lures, and flies with explosive strikes. A river specimen weighing 5–7kg is genuinely powerful. Catches of 8–10kg are possible. They are almost always released after a photograph, catch and release is the standard practice.

Bream (Tilapia)
Also present in large numbers throughout the river. Bream don't fight like tiger fish but they're consistently on the bite and provide excellent sport on lighter tackle. A good 2–3kg bream will test light spinning gear and is a reliable option when tiger fish activity is lower.

Vundu Catfish
The river's largest predator, a massive bottom-dwelling catfish that can exceed 50kg. Vundu are targeted at night with large baits but can occasionally be caught during the day. If you hook one, you'll know it.

The Fishing Experience

Your guide collects you from your Victoria Falls hotel and transfers you to the fishing area on the upper Zambezi, the stretch of river above the falls, characterised by lush islands, strong currents, and excellent habitat for both tiger fish and bream.

Your guide provides all equipment, rods, reels, lines, lures, and terminal tackle. If you have your own preferred gear, you're welcome to bring it. The most effective methods on the upper Zambezi are:

• Spinning with lures and spinners, the most popular and effective method for tiger fish; cast across the current and retrieve through the strike zone
• Light bream fishing, float or bottom fishing with bait in the calmer channels between islands
• Fly fishing, increasingly popular on the Zambezi; tiger fish take well-presented streamers and poppers in the right conditions

Sessions run for a minimum of 3 hours. Morning sessions (6am departure) and afternoon sessions (3pm departure) are both available. The morning session benefits from lower light, active feeding fish, and cooler temperatures, this is the recommended slot for tiger fishing.

Do I need fishing experience?
No, your guide will show you the techniques, help you cast, and work the best spots. Beginners consistently catch fish on the Zambezi. That said, experienced anglers will get more from the session in terms of the finer points of tiger fishing.

Is it safe on the river?
Yes, life jackets are provided and your guide knows the river well. The upper Zambezi above the falls is a working river with strong currents in some sections, but the fishing is conducted from stable positions and from boats in appropriate areas. Hippos and crocodiles are present in the river, your guide manages all safety aspects and knows exactly where to fish safely.

What time of year is best for tiger fishing?
September to November (low water, dry season) is the prime season for tiger fish on the upper Zambezi. The lower water concentrates fish and increases activity. However, tiger fish are caught year-round, even during the rainy season, fishing remains productive.

Can I keep the fish I catch?
Tiger fish are almost always released after the catch, this is both standard practice and, increasingly, a requirement in certain sections. Bream can generally be kept for eating if desired. Your guide will advise on current regulations.
