Victoria Falls
Safari & Wildlife Tour
There are very few places on earth where you can stand at the meeting point of four countries. Impalila Island in Namibia is one of them, sitting precisely where the Zambezi and Chobe Rivers converge, touching the borders of Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, and Zimbabwe simultaneously. This day trip from Victoria Falls gets you there and back in 13 hours, with Chobe National Park's legendary wildlife along the way.
It starts with a game drive through Chobe, one of Africa's highest concentrations of elephant and a park famous for lion, leopard, hippo, and crocodile. Then lunch beside the Chobe River. Then a boat ride into Namibia to Impalila Island, where you step into a village that most tourists never reach and a landscape that genuinely feels like the edge of the explored world. Then a sunset river cruise back through Botswana as the light turns gold. Then Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, by nightfall.
Three countries. One extraordinary day.
Most Chobe day trips cover the game drive and the river cruise, and they're excellent. This one goes further, adding Impalila Island gives you something no standard Chobe day trip offers:
If you're doing one Chobe day trip from Victoria Falls, this is the one to do.
This tour runs year-round, but the experience shifts with the seasons.
| Season | Months | Conditions | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Peak dry season | July–October | Wildlife concentrated at river; maximum animal density; hot | Wildlife photography, elephant herds, predator sightings |
| Early dry season | May–June | Good wildlife; green landscape still recovering | Balanced experience, fewer crowds |
| Green season | November–March | Lush scenery; animals spread out; occasional afternoon rain | Birdwatching, newborns, lower prices |
| Late green season | April | Highest water levels; Chobe River full; dramatic landscapes | River atmosphere; dramatic scenery |
Our recommendation: July to October for maximum wildlife impact, September and October in particular see extraordinary elephant concentrations at the Chobe River, with herds of 200+ gathering daily. That said, every month delivers a genuinely excellent day.

Midway through the day, lunch is served at Cresta Mowana Lodge, a riverside property with an outdoor terrace overlooking the Chobe River. The buffet is generous and varied, with a full spread of hot and cold dishes, salads, and desserts. While you eat, hippos are frequently visible in the river below and elephant herds pass along the opposite bank. It's the finest lunch location of any Chobe day trip in the region.
After lunch, you board a boat at Cresta Mowana and cross the Chobe River into Namibia, a short, scenic crossing that takes you to Impalila Island. The island sits at the precise point where the Zambezi River and Chobe River converge, making it one of the most geographically unique inhabited places on earth.
What you'll experience on Impalila Island:
The Village
Impalila is home to a small Namibian community whose way of life has changed remarkably little from the traditional fishing and farming culture that has existed here for generations. Your guide leads you through the village, introducing you to residents, explaining the local customs and daily life, and giving you an honest look at existence on an island where the closest town requires a boat crossing.
The Landscape
The island's riverine forest, ancient baobab trees, and the sweeping confluence of two great African rivers create a landscape of genuine beauty and drama. The sound of the rivers, the birdlife, and the remoteness combine to make Impalila feel completely different from the tourist circuit, which, for most visitors, is exactly the point.
The Four-Country Point
Standing on Impalila Island, you are simultaneously adjacent to four countries, Namibia (where you are standing), Botswana (across the Chobe), Zambia (across the Zambezi), and Zimbabwe (visible in the distance). On a clear day, all four are visible. There is nowhere else in the world where this is possible.
The Birdlife
Impalila's position at the confluence of two major rivers makes it exceptional for birdwatching. African Fish Eagles, various kingfisher species, herons, storks, and a rich array of waterbirds are active throughout the island. Birders should bring binoculars and a field guide.
The final act of the day is the river cruise, and it's the one most guests describe as the highlight. As the afternoon light softens and the heat eases, animals converge on the Chobe River in extraordinary numbers. Elephants wade in to drink and swim, enormous bulls crossing midstream, calves lifted by the current, entire family groups bathing together with the sunset behind them. Buffalo graze the grassy islands. Hippos surface in clusters. Crocodiles sun themselves on the banks. The light turns warm and golden.
Your guide positions the boat for the best sightings and photography angles throughout. The cruise lasts approximately 2.5–3 hours, and virtually every minute delivers something worth watching.
