Victoria Falls itself is approximately 1,708 metres wide, with an average depth of around 100 metres and a deepest point of approximately 108 metres, according to UNESCO.

What is Devil’s Pool?
Devil’s Pool is a natural rock pool at the very edge of Victoria Falls on Livingstone Island. During the lower-water season, the reduction in the river level exposes rock formations that make access to the pool possible under controlled conditions.
The pool has a natural rock lip that helps create a relatively sheltered area within the surrounding flowing water. Visitors who are permitted to enter can sit or swim in the natural basin while looking toward the waterfall edge.
The experience provides an unusually close perspective of the Falls, but the surrounding Zambezi remains a powerful natural river and the activity should never be treated as an ordinary swimming experience.

Guests normally arrive at the designated Livingstone Island launch site before their scheduled departure. Current operator information advises guests to arrive approximately 30 minutes before departure. Boat Transfer to Livingstone Island
Access is normally by boat across the Zambezi River. Depending on water level and operating conditions, different types of boats may be used. The current Livingstone Island operator describes the boat journey as approximately 10 minutes, although actual timing can vary.

On arrival, visitors are accompanied by guides around Livingstone Island and the surrounding Falls area. The exact route depends on water levels and the conditions on the day. The island offers close views of the Zambezi and several sections of Victoria Falls.
Walk to the Pool
When Devil’s Pool is open, guests are guided through the appropriate route toward the natural pool. Reaching the pool requires movement over uneven and potentially slippery rocky surfaces, so sensible footwear and reasonable physical fitness are important.
Devil’s Pool Swim
Swimming is permitted only when guides determine that the water level and river conditions are suitable. Guests enter the pool under direct professional supervision. The position allows visitors to look toward the brink of Victoria Falls, but the activity is controlled because of the powerful river and waterfall immediately nearby.
Return to Livingstone Island and the Mainland
After the pool experience and island visit, guests return to the launch point by boat. The complete duration varies according to the selected experience, operator and schedule.

Is Devil’s Pool safe?
Devil’s Pool should not be described as completely risk-free. It is a natural river environment immediately beside a major waterfall.
River conditions decide access
The activity is carried out only during suitable water conditions and under the supervision of trained guides. Water levels are assessed, and swimming or other activities can be stopped or closed when conditions are considered unsafe.
The operator also reserves the right to refuse swimming to weak swimmers.
Never attempt it independently
Visitors should never attempt to reach or swim in Devil’s Pool independently. Zambia Tourism states that access to Livingstone Island requires a guide.
The important safety principle is that the pool is accessible only when river conditions make the activity appropriate.
Usually August to late December / early January
Devil’s Pool is normally available during the lower-water season, generally around August to late December or early January. These dates are not fixed every year because the Zambezi water level changes naturally.
During periods of higher water, the river becomes unsuitable for the Devil’s Pool experience and the activity is closed. Livingstone Island itself also has a seasonal operating pattern, with periods of closure during high-water conditions.
Island visit and swimming age
Minimum age to visit Livingstone Island: 8 years.
Minimum age for swimming in the pools: 12 years.

More than a swimming excursion
Livingstone Island & Devil’s Pool is different from viewing Victoria Falls from a normal observation point because visitors reach an island within the Zambezi River and experience the Falls from a position much closer to the river’s edge.

The Zambezi around Victoria Falls is a natural river environment, and visitors may observe birdlife and other wildlife during their wider visit depending on location and conditions. However, wildlife sightings are naturally unpredictable and should never be guaranteed as part of a Devil’s Pool excursion.
The Victoria Falls World Heritage property contains important riverine and forest habitats, as well as several islands and gorges that support wildlife and bird species.

When to experience Devil’s Pool
For the Devil’s Pool swimming experience specifically, the lower-water part of the year is generally the relevant period, traditionally around August through December and sometimes into early January.
However, the best time cannot be defined by calendar dates alone. Zambezi River levels are the deciding factor, and the guides make the final safety decision.
For visitors who mainly want to experience the highest water flow of Victoria Falls, the spectacle can be very different from the low-water Devil’s Pool season.
